I love happy endings!!! Falling for the Farmer is a very well-written story with romance, rich characters, and a wonderful sense of being right in the middle of the apple orchards of Australia! Narelle does an awesome job of showing us that money is not everything when it comes to love of the heart that is so richly blessed by God. This is a hard-to-put-down book and I enjoyed it very much. Falling For the Farmer
By Narelle Atkins
Jack Bradley helps Kate Lawson escape from the church, while her wedding is in progress, leaving everyone to stare and wonder where she’s running off to. Kate realized, almost too late, that she didn’t love her fiancé Rodney. So she left him standing at the alter. Jack drives the getaway car and was in a perfect position to help her escape. But, where will she go? What will her mother and father say? How can she tell Rodney he’s not the man for her?
Sometimes it’s hard to trust people. Jack figures this out when Kate comes to work for him at his orchards. How could any man trust a woman that would leave her man standing there at the church? She shouldn’t have waited until the last minute to change her mind. But did she have a reason for doing it? Or was she being selfish and only thinking about herself?
I loved Falling For the Farmer! Jack and Kate are wonderful, well-developed characters that I hated saying goodbye to on the last page. Kate decides she needs to face her responsibilities and stand on her own. Where does that leave Jack? If she stands on her own will she need him in her life? She’s a city girl; can she survive leaving the city behind and spending her life in the country instead of in a mall shopping? Pick up this book by Narelle Atkins and enjoy this sweet country romance!
Kate Lawson is standing at the back of the church in Sydney, Australia. The bridal march has begun. She sees her groom's triumphant grin as he awaits her.
She can't go through with it.
She drops her father's arm and bolts for the rented Cadillac driven by her maid of honor's brother, Jack Bradley, and begs him to take her far from the church.
From reluctant bride to runaway bride, Kate can't believe she actually stood up to her mother. She quails at the drama she's unleashed, but there's no going back. Not to Rodney, not to her mother…and not to the apartment or job she'd already given up. What will she do?
She escapes Sydney with Megan, her maid of honor and best friend, who is heading for a ski instructor job in New South Wales, a few hours' drive from Sydney. Kate's mother won't be looking for her there.
But as luck would have it, she crashes her car on the snowy roads near Jack's farm. (Remember Jack? Megan's brother?) Megan goes ahead to her job, but Kate must wait for repairs. Jack's aunt takes her in and Kate offers to help out around the orchard. What Jack really needs is someone to untangle his bookkeeping, so Kate takes that on as the mechanic awaits parts for her car.
Sooner or later, though, Kate must come to grips with her hasty retreat. Rodney—and Kate's mother—will forgive her if Kate agrees to the marriage after all. But how can she, when she's now falling for the farmer and discovering what love really is?
Atkins kept secondary plotlines to a minimum and focused on the budding romance between Kate and Jack. The issues of Kate's wounded heart, the push-and-pull between farm and city life, and Jack's own insecurities all play out against the backdrop of an organic apple orchard in the Australian hills.
This setting was the tipping point for me in requesting an advance review copy of Falling for the Farmer. I live in an apple-growing area of Canada and was interested in the similarities and differences between the two countries' orcharding practices. I may have come for the setting, but I stayed because of the enchanting love story of Kate and Jack.
Kate is about to enter the church for her wedding when she realises she can't go through with it, no matter what her mother says. She needs to escape Sydney, needs a job and needs somewhere to live. Bridesmaid Megan and her brother have the perfect solution Kate can work on the family apple orchard, situated in a small town near the Snowy Mountains.
As Kate settles in to life in Snowgum Creek, she finds she isn't regretting leaving Rodney at the altar ... and she is falling for the handsome farmer (I guess that technically, Jack is an orchardist, but Falling for the Orchardist doesn't have quite the same ring, does it?).
The characters were excellent. Kate and Jack were likeable, Megan shows potential for future books, and Kate's mother ... well, I just wanted to have words with that woman! Her reputation with her posh Sydney friends is more important than her daughter.
The one fault with Falling for the Farmer is what I see as the common fault of category romance novels they are short, which inevitably means part of it feels rushed (in this case, the last couple of chapters. Or it could be that I didn't want it to end).
It is wonderful to see a Christian novel from one of the major US publishers set in my part of the world, even if it is across the ditch. Falling for the Farmer is the first of a trilogy, with the second book due out in May. I'll be looking forward to reading it.
Recommended for fans of light romance.
