This post world war two novella is a sweet and delightful romance between midshipman Joe and Frances, an Admiral's daughter. Since Frances's mother passed away, she's taken over the role of hostess for her father with his important guests, and helped raise her younger sister. The last thing she wants is to end up in a relationship with an up and coming Naval officer and be the one left behind, like her mother was during the war. But Joe knows from the moment he sees Frances that she's it for him. Can he convince her that loving him would be worth the risk? What I really enjoyed about this story was its simplicity. It's a boy, who has a crush on a girl, and goes out of his way to show her that he's interested in whatever she's willing to give - whether it's friendship or something more. And because of the time period, it's very innocent - no swearing, no over the top sex scenes, just two people getting to know each other and falling in love. There is some kissing, some swoonworthy moments and we do get an eventual love scene for the couple that is tasteful and still sexy to go with the sweetness. I really liked both of the characters. Joe is just an all around gentleman who, while he respects Frances, goes out of way to get her to give him a chance, even after she makes it clear that she's not in the market for a Navy husband. And Frances, well, she's got a solid head on her shoulders. But while it might try to get in the way of her heart, the reality is that when she realizes that living without Joe is the only way to avoid a Navy man, she's strong enough to admit to herself that she's been wrong. Just a lovely, sweet story all around and a perfect holiday treat. 4 stars.

It's probably not something I would have discovered on my own, not being familiar with the author. The cover is what drew my initial interest. It's visceral without being too erotic. It perfectly fits the feel and emotion of the story.
Joe is a Midshipman in the US Navy, in the time just after the end of WW2. Frances is the young woman who has caught his eye and his heart, but she also happens to be the daughter of a legendary Naval hero and Admiral. Frances wants nothing to do with a Navy man, believing them all only interested due to who her father is. Except Joe. Joe is only interested in Frances, and he makes that quite clear. It's actually quite daring for the time and circumstances, but with a single-minded determination, Joe finally wins her heart.
It's romantic and nostalgic, and leaves the reader longing for a different time and place. A beautifully told story. I enjoyed it immensely.
This was a sweet romance between a man at military university that falls for the dutiful daughter of the superintendent of the said university. The father is an admiral and widowed. The heroine has had to pick up on the responsibilities of hosting his parties and taking care of household duties. She has also had to grow up knowing how hard life it can be for the wife of a navy officer. She makes commitment never to date a military officer like her father.
However, she never bargained she would meet hero or that he would not give up on them being a couple. The road to their HEA was not an easy one. She was resistant at first and even went so far as to try and date another person to show him she had some type life as well. Nothing came out of this and even enforced her with to not date military men. Yet again, hero was there to challenge her and take her home after she ditches her loser date.
Things finally pick up after heroine takes up hero's challenge and starts to see him. The courtship was sweet. The climax picks up the pace even more and the epilogue gives us a wedding and honeymoon scene. Up until the honeymoon it was a clean read, except for some sweet kisses. The one love scene at the end was sweet as they both are virgins on their wedding night.
I enjoyed the read. It is light hearted, military romance novel. It is a safe read. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
A Midnight Clear is such a lovely gem of a novella. The story revolves around Frances, a woman in her early twenties who is a Navy Admiral’s daughter, and Joe, a Navy midshipman. The story is such a beautiful dance between these two characters. As I read the story, I felt France’s resolve of her convictions and her trepidation of love. She is resolute in her thinking and actions because she has had to be. It was heartbreaking, sexy, and joyous to read her journey of letting Joe into her heart (or at least recognizing he was already there).
Joe is an absolute dream. I love that he knows he is a romantic. Reading the passages of when Joe thinks of Frances is absolutely swoon-worthy! His love for Frances is what every romance reader is looking for. He also has a strong sense of commitment to his dreams and the Navy so it was interesting to read his coming to terms with what that means for his future with Frances. The ways he shows Frances his love is truly breathtaking.
Though it is part of the Fly Me To The Moon series, it can be read as a standalone. But really, why would you not read Star Dust? It is fantastic as well. I will definitely be reading any upcoming books in this series.
