Abracadaver Esther Diamond Novel Laura Resnick Books
I adore this series! Even the on-and-off romance has gotten to the point of something of a standing joke (even as I hope for a happy ending!), and the rest is wonderful.Take a somewhat successful actress with no particular paranormal skillz, except as a catalyst, and dump her into increasingly elaborate paranormal situations. Add humor, and a sort-of boyfriend who has NO truck with the mystical, and....
This one started right on the heels of "Misfortune Cookie", and it would probably be best to start there, or at one of the earlier novels. Still, there is probably enough context that an experienced reader can figure it out.
The plot here is great, as it is in this series. The characters re well-drawn and idiosyncratic rather than being ciphers. Tensions between them are a logical result, and add to the plot and the rhythm. The dialog is excellent, too. I really like the way Resnick sees that various people have various priorities, and these both conflict and cooperate as the events proceed.
I used to read a number of paranormal series, but this is one of the few ones I am continuing to follow.
Recommended for anyone who likes humor as well as world-saving in their paranormal fiction!

Abracadaver Esther Diamond Novel Laura Resnick Books Reviews
I love this whole series and I think this one is the funniest since Doppelgangster. It did seem short but I was eager to finish before falling behind in life.
There aren't many authors I get excited about. I tend to be fickle in my fandom. The one exception is Laura Resnick, I look forward to Esther's next mystical debacle with great excitement! If you are a fan of the quick and witty read, don't hesitate to pick up one, or all, of the books in the Esther Diamond series! Even if you happen to be Lithuanian )
The hijinks ensue as corpses rise and Esther is left chasing them with the usual cohorts in tow. She also has boyfriend/cop problems, but the real flow of this book doesn't hit until the last fifth or so. The first half of the book is made of a small number of scenes in which there's a lot of talking around things that could have been resolved in far fewer pages, which is why this is a 3 star review. The end of the book shows great promise, but (in terms of pacing) would have served as a better middle.
Unfortunately, much of the book feels like a warm-up, but the main characters do get some play that keeps hope alive. We learn more about Lucky and Esther's back on the job. There's an amusing element where a certain actor is thrown into the middle of Lopez's playground, and makes things harder for our favorite cop and his partner, the Nelli-maligned Quinn. Elements from previous books get a bit of play (namely fire), and Esther's definitely got some 'splainin' to do. (And seems doomed to forever get into deep trouble whist wearing costumes.)
I just love this whole series. I did feel that it was almost too close of a stop and start with the last book. More like it should have just been a bigger book 6 rather than split off into two separate novels.
But other than that I still love the interesting characters and can't wait to see what will happen next!
I rediscovered Laura Resnick's first four Esther Diamond novels gathering dust on my bookshelf and got hooked as I re-read them. This addition was equal to the others but a little rushed at the end. I got the feeling that there was a deadline or page count threshold that caught her by surprise which made the ending more rushed than usual. However, it did not diminish the novel by much and I would still recommend it with four plus stars.
I love poor Esther and have read every book in this series. One of the things I have really enjoyed with this series is the humor. This book was somewhat darker and less humorous than the previous novels but was still well worth reading. The one thing that is sort of off-putting to me is Esther's on and off relationship with Lopez. I sort of feel like either it needs to end or in some way move to another level. If Lopez has a gift perhaps that needs to come to a point where he has to at least entertain the idea that the supernatural does exist. I look forward to the next book in the series but I would like to see some growth in the characters.
My wife and I love these books! (I was kind and let her read it first.) You really need to start at the beginning with "Disappearing Nightly" if you haven't tried the series. This one starts immediately after "Misfortune Cookie" and continues the story with a completely new villain. The humor is not quite as slapstick as the preceding novel. And it isn't overblown with the history of New York's Chinatown. The mystery/adventure is certainly there, perhaps a bit more serious than the author's previous works.
I found the first book only a few months ago, and pretty quickly read the rest in short order (and some out of order, but you can pretty easily do so without really ruining any previous stories). However, while I do enjoy the premise, the whole on-again-off-again-no-really-I'm-not-that-type-of-woman romance has gotten old, reaally fast. I get that the author has done other romance novels, and maybe she's got a particular thing for it, but Esther is, by this point, exactly the type of woman she claims not to be when dealing with Lopez. Either get over the hump and realize he's not your boyfriend and shouldn't be, or finally beat him over the (metaphorical) head so he gets what's going on. Too many fantasy novels lately seem to be more interested in forcing romantic conflict than just telling a damn story.
ANYWAY....this wasn't anything else, otherwise, than enjoyable, though the ending was surprisingly quick, and slightly disappointing; I had hoped if nothing else the situation in question would actually be explored in the next novel. Does mean I'm curious what the next book will end up dealing with, though.
