I absolutely adore Tori Spring. She's like the most likeable unlikeable protagonist I've ever encountered in a book. I say this because she tries really hard to be this misanthropic introvert, but you still can't help but love her. Right off the bat she puts you in mind of a female Holden Caulfield, which Oseman clearly foresaw readers making that comparison and even humorously addresses it at the end of the novel when Tori exasperatedly asks, "Can't any teenager be sad and, like, not be compared to that book?"

But Oseman has written much more than the female, 21st century version of Holden Caulfield. There is a sense of plot here that, while subtle and meandering, is much more apparent in Solitaire than Catcher in the Rye. To the point where the combination of smart characters and teen-angst-filled plot make me picture this as the next big contemporary teen movie sensation. But in order for that to happen, more people need to read Solitaire. I don't think this is a book that has gotten much buzz or publicity and that is a shame because it deserves so much more attention than it is getting.

I found this book from the author's prequel web-comic "Heartstopper." I'm not even sure what to say, aside from that this book was very meaningful for me! These were some of the most interesting characters I've ever experienced. Also, a lot of the overall messages really hit home, in a way a book's never truly done for me before. I initially just bought the version, but after reading, I bought a physical copy for my own collection. Great stuff.
I really liked this book! It was like a much less pretentious Catcher in the Rye for this decade, and I love Alice Oseman's writing style. I'm out of highschool now, but I wish I had this book then, because it definitely captures all of those feelings so perfectly, and the characters are all really well developed. Literally complaint I have is that the cover shown is not the one I received (the cover shown matches her other three books, which are also amazing), but that has nothing to do with the book itself!
Solitaire has made the list as one of my favorite books of 2016. The characters are realistic and honest. Tori, Michel, Charlie, Nick, Becky, and Lucas are all characters who are flawed and brilliant. The main character Tori is relatable from the music she listens to and the movies she watched. Another thing I wanted to mention is the way mental illness is portrayed when it comes to Charlie, Tori's brother as well as Tori herself. Charlie suffers from anxiety and anorexia prior to the beginning of the book. By the time, the book starts he has it under more control. Tori, on the other hand suffers from depression throughout the entire book. The only people who notice is are Michel and Charlie. What I loved about this aspect of the book was that it wasn't something that just went away as soon as the girl met the guy that in common in books that deal with mental illness. This was not the case. For one thing, Tori's depression doesn't go away. She deals with it constantly, she has good days and she has bad days. It is an honest portrayal. I loved the friendship between Tori and Michel, and I was happy that this book has no romance in it. These were two characters who had formed a strong bond because they were two lonely people who were both angry at the world. One of my favorite scenes is when Michel and Tori are watching Beauty and The Beast at a party. It's a sweet scene because it's the first time that Michel is vulnerable around Tori. Charlie and Nick were great together. I loved their relationship, it was sweet. I loved this book and I can't wait to pick up Alice Oseman's second book, Radio Silence. I would recommend this book for fans of John Green, Perks of Being a Wallflower, and The Catcher in The Rye.
I read this book after finding Alice's webcomic (Heartstopper) online and reading it about 3 times through in the span of a couple days. (Heartstopper is a comic that focuses on the main character of Solitaire's younger brother and his relationship with his in-book boyfriend). This book is incredible, and I think that it is a great book for high schoolers and college students even, exploring both light-hearted and darker subjects in a respectful and interesting way. There are some aspects of the book which I find to be a little dated, (mostly blog/tumblr/fandom things, but then again there could very well be people that are still into supernatural and sherlock in this day and age. Who knows?) but for the most part I was really pulled in by the story and enjoyed the book thoroughly.

As a heads up, this book does cover some topics that could be triggering or whatnot, such as mentions of suicide attempts, eating disorders (and possibly OCD - not explicitly stated but my own inference), self-harm, and general self-negative thoughts. I'm not trying to give any spoilers away or anything but keep that in mind if these are something that you might want to avoid.

All-in-all this was an excellent story, and as a side note, I absolutely love how effortlessly Alice includes such a diverse group of characters in all of her novels, diverse not just racially but also in terms of LGBT+ representation. It is a joy to see all of these wonderful characters together and it warms my heart that she does this.
