Five star all the way. I grew up reading comic books and still collect them to this day. I have been searching Amazon for quite some time to find a superhero novel. Been getting quite bored with Marvel and their relentless politics and DC rebooting constantly. What caught my eye about this book was the title. One of my all time favorite characters is a D list supervillain. Marvel's the Porcupine. He started out a villain and died a hero. Always had a soft spot for the character. Also was an Iron Man fan. Especially the original one in his bulky armor. Add the Greek gods and I knew I had to read this.I won't give away to much. Cal is an armored villain genius who creates a powered armor in a world with heroes and villains who have natural or acquired superpowers. Poor Cal is just a less than ordinary guy who's only superpower is his scientific mind. He gets caught up in a world where the so called heroes are not as honorable as the public perception would lead you to believe. The main characters are Cal, Stacy, Wendy and Andy to name a few. All superpowers beings. This is more real than the comic books. If there were really heroes and villains this is probably how they would be. Real life politics would definitely impact what heroes and villains do. In this story you will see how that plays out. Superman would not fit well here. Batman might. It is well worth the money. If you are a comic book geek like me you won't be dissapointed. I'm going to purchase the next two books when I'm done writing this.
I might add there are quite a few super powered people in this. Always loved the groups. Characters that have similar powers to Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Porcupine, Flash, Whirlwind, Wonder Woman, etc. All characters that I loved in the comic books. Quite a few cheesy characters that would be considered D listers as well. In the comic books the A listers rule. Here a D lister is the star. I highly recommend it.

Confessions of a DList Supervillain Jim Bernheimer Books Reviews
A really fun read - plenty of well-written action sequences, some good inversions of the usual hero/villain stereotypes, and an engaging lead character (Mechani-Cal, the D-list supervillain of the title), a lovable loser who you can't help but root for. Without spoiling major plot points, a series of random events leaves him as one of the few people unaffected by a plague of mind-controlling insects... and one of the last hopes to save the world, superhero style.
Cal's transition from ineffectual villain to reluctant hero is engaging, and his wry observations are very entertaining. Many of the other characters are fun as well, even those whose roles are relatively minor. Action scenes are solid and thrilling. For me, the best parts involve Cal adapting available technology in a constant effort to make his armored suit just a little bit better - the author shows great ingenuity in these scenes.
Bernheimer is a solid writer who clearly loves his super subject matter. However, the text could have benefitted from a proofreader; numerous grammar and punctuation errors add up to a minor distraction (though they don't damage the quality of the story and may not bother readers who don't share my grammar-nazi tendencies). The book is also heavy on puns, which can get a little tiresome after a while. Again, this is a minor quibble that won't be shared by every reader.
Overall, "Confessions" is a must-read for fans of the superhero genre, and a good read for anyone who likes an underdog story.
I confess, I enjoyed this book. It is irreverent and realistic, insofar as a story can be in a world with powered people. Very few people are actually as "good" or as "bad" as they may seem and most everyone has a dark side. Life is rarely black-and-white and the protagonist of the story does well to play in the gray. This is not necessarily a superhero story for kiddies since there are some adult themes.
The story is well-written, moves well, does not bother with unnecessary world-building, and takes you on a fun ride. It's not some heavy story from Tolstoy or a "finding yourself" journey from Elizabeth Gilbert. It is exactly what it appears to be...a fun story with a protagonist you can appreciate. I had trouble putting it down and quickly grabbed the next book in the series.
I enjoyed this take on the age-old hero vs villain story. Bernheimer has created a dystopian world where mankind relies on superheroes to save them, and the most popular superheroes are The Olympians - 12 common people who were chosen to wield the powers of certain of the Gods of Olympus.
Conversely there are the supervillains, and Cal `Mechani-Cal' Stringel is, by his own assertion, not one of the more successful of them, but he gets by.
The world has been taken over by bugs the size of grasshoppers that have attached themselves to everyone's necks, reorganizing the world into a hive society of junkies addicted to the bugs in the desperate way that a junkie is addicted to heroin. Because he works inside of his mechanical suit, Cal has managed to avoid this fate. Out of necessity, he finds himself trying to get the `good-guys' back on their feet and back to saving the world like they are supposed to be doing.
As superheroes go, The Olympians are as unlikeable and evil a bunch of shallow, self-serving stars as you could ask for. The supervillains, on the other hand, are actually the better human beings, because they are honest about their motives.
I don't normally like first person, present tense point of view in a story, because I find it difficult to get into into the story. But once I got past that initial issue I have to admit, this story captured and held my interest.
The adventures that Cal has as he tries to re-hab the Olympians and save the world are quite entertaining. There are some adult themes, but though there is nothing graphic I recommend this as a fun adult read.
